Vascular screening

Non-cardiac vascular screening

Ultrasound of carotid neck vessels is used to pick up early arterial disease changes to enable stroke risk prevention.

Abdominal ultrasound screening we feel is under-utilised: it is harmless as a test, and useful for picking up kidney or gallstones, and in particular abdominal aortic aneurysms, (the ballooning of the main artery with the risk of fatal rupture increasing with size.) They are well-worth screening for in patients over 50 years of age as they cause 1% of our deaths and are preventable. We have now had a significant group of patients who have been treated with the new endovascular stents inserted up from the femoral artery at the top of the leg, and placed as a sleeve inside the aneurysm, thereby avoiding major surgery. We are very encouraged by their excellent results.
