Radiation and Screening

We take radiation seriously when we advise tests. CT scans are potentially harmful radiation, whereas MRI is non-ionising – non harmful radiation. MRI does not have any cancer inducing risk, to the best of our knowledge. The Practice has knowledge of where the best machines are, as this can be important and affect your radiation dose. Presently even some distinguished hospitals have machines that are sadly far from state of the art.
Ultrasound investigations do not use ionising radiation and are therefore safe, and can be used in pregnancy.
Ultimately the decision of the best test involving radiation needs to be based upon the individual.

There is, however, for once, an advantage to being older, in that in general terms there is a 15-year phase lag untill we are affected by radiation. This means that if you are 75 you have a lower threshold for investigations involving radiation.
